CHAPTER FIVE

We made our way to the waiting room. Camille chose a seat against the far wall with a view of the front desk and I sat down in the chair beside her. Her eyes were puffy and red and her face looked strained with worry. I held her hand and stroked the back of it softly with my thumb.

"She means a lot to you." I said.

Camille leaned her head back against the wall behind her and gazed up at the ceiling.

"She's been with me since I was a child."

I couldn't imagine a child needing her own driver but there were a lot of things I didn't know or understand about Camille's world. I assumed that Leda Fisk must have been a Nanny of sorts, someone that took care of Camille in place of her parents. "Then you must care about her a lot." I said.

Camille looked at me with tears welling up in her eyes. "You saved her life," she whispered and then she broke down and held onto me.

I held her and stroked her hair softly. "Hey, we both did."

She held on to me for awhile and then pulled away. "Your clothes are wet." she said, "you must be freezing."

I should have been but I wasn't. "I'm okay. It's warm in here." I assured her.

"You're always so calm," she said, looking into my eyes. "Thank you."

"For being calm?" I asked.

"For knowing what to do and for being here."

"I want to be here, Camille." I would have told her more, but it wasn't the time. "I'll always be here, for you."

"Thank you, Claire. I know you mean it." She leaned her head back against the wall again. "Always is a long time."

There was pain in her words, an old wound that hadn't healed. I had seen her sadness before and felt the sudden shifts in her mood but I let the comment lie. She was right, anyways. Nothing lasted forever, as much as I wanted it to then.

I felt her mood had shifted to a dark place and I wanted to lift her spirits somehow.

"The last time I was here was when my Dad had his accident,” I began, it doesn't seem that long ago now." Camille looked at me with her sad eyes. "My mom and I sat here while he was in the ER. Mom was in shock, I think she thought he was going to die. He wasn't in very good shape and the Doctors were worried about his heart, on top of everything else. But he made it and now, he can even walk a bit by himself."

"So he really did fall off a roof," she said quietly as she gazed at the far wall.

Her statement shocked me. "Did you think I made it up?"

"I don’t know. It’s easy to tell stories to strangers," she said. Life had made her cynical, I guessed.

"And yet you got me into Dixon anyways."

She leaned forward in her chair and ran her hands through her hair. "I just thought you deserved a break.
